270307 – Lessons from a Book – Power of the Powerless

After months of delay I took this book. This one was suggested by my friend Omid and is actually under Politics Category. I hardly read these topics but after the Woman, Life, Freedom Movement in Iran I was suggested to read the book.

Due to my disinterest in political books, I postponed it after reading only 4 pages of it. Also to mention since I didn’t have access to buy the original book, I had bought the Persian translation which I admit was not a smooth translation (at least for me). So, I delayed reading it for more than 6 months but since I cannot leave any book unfinished, I came back to read the remaining 160plus pages.

After finishing it I realized how history can be repeated again and again in different parts of the world. The book had a lot that taught me and I almost underlined each paragraph. The fun part was me taking side notes (I have a habit of writing nest to each paragraph the thoughts I have about that certain sentence or phrase in the book). I could bring examples I personally knew for different situations mentioned in the book.

I strongly suggest this book, not for developed or democratic countries like Scandinavian Countries, Australia, USA or Canada. Sadly, due to some reasons mentioned in the book, I cannot elaborate more and give my political views as I maybe questioned by the local government of the country I am residing currently. This book can open eyes of many if not a few.

One major lesson I learned is the best political system in a country is when a life of a person is valued enough to create an environment worth living.

“The most important thing is always the quality of that life and whether or not the laws enhance life or repress it, not merely whether they are upheld or not.”

~  Václav Havel; Power of the Powerless ~
