Though this genre of movies is not my favorite but I was asked to watched it and tell my opinion about the movie. Also, since I admire the actors in the movie specially Emma Stone (which she won another Oscar for this), Mark Ruffalo, and Willem Dafoe, deep inside I was curious about the movie. With a little push I watched the movie and I have to admit it is worth watching and Emma Stone played well and truly deserved the Oscar award.
However, I learned 3 things from this movie and 1st of all was the approach of Dr. Godwin Baxter, letting her daughter to go for adventure despite his own personal opinion and interest, and despite his daughter’s departure made him emotionally and mentally painful.
This act is actually a best permission parents can let their kids have, and that’s to let their children start their journey and learn life by their own. As Carl Yung said the Hero’s Journey starts when one becomes Orphan and learn by himself / herself how to manage life. I admired how this concept was shown in the movie and how this act made Bella an experienced aware lady whom she became at the end. More notably that despite being on wedding aisle, she suddenly asked her to be husband and father (two dominant male figures in a woman’s life) to try another life journey, both of them didn’t stop her despite their inner thoughts. This for me was a great lesson. Every person (specially women) has the right to experience their own life journey without dictatorship of their parents (primary and secondary care givers). Parents role is to support them along the way if they asked for it. And intervene only when their life is in danger (like becoming addicted or creating self-harming habits, etc) with the support of a psychologist or life coach). This journey, if experienced personally makes one to grow much and learn much and maturely experience life.
- Duncan Wedderburn: You’re always reading now, Bella. You’re losing some of your adorable way of speaking.
- Bella Baxter: I am a changeable feast. As are all of we. Apparently according to Emerson, disagreed with by Harry.

Second lesson was how one’s choices can change the course of his/her life along the way. As Duncan Weddeburn, whom selfishly made a choice to control Bell and how his poor choices led him to lose his mind and life quality. Hence one should remember along the way challenges may appear but one should overcome the challenges by making correct choices based on values and principles and sometimes asking help from right people or consulting with people who care.
- Duncan Wedderburn: “We’re all masters of our own ships.”…
And the 3rd Lesson was our mission in life (not vision) which can be seen in a quote bellow:
- Bella Baxter: It is the goal of all to improve, advance, progress, grow.
And for that we may face a lot of things and at some points we may be F**ked by challenges along the way, but we can be stronger by learning from our failures, and use them as strength. Cause no matter how life keeps f**king us there will be time it will be tired and give up. In the next passage just imagine Duncan as the dark side of life who challenges us and Bell is the hero/heroin within who doesn’t want to give up.
- [after sex]
- Bella Baxter: Why do people not just do this *all* the time?
- Duncan Wedderburn: [chuckles] Well, at the risk of being immodest: You’ve just been thrice f**ked by the very best. It’s probable no other man will ever bring you to the raptures I have. I feel bad for you.
- Bella Baxter: Well, then it will just be *you* I do furious jumping with.
- Duncan Wedderburn: [chuckles] Furious jumping? I love that.
- Bella Baxter: I’m rested. Let us go again.
- Duncan Wedderburn: Again? Unfortunately, even I have my limits. Men cannot keep coming back for more.
