One of my favorite actors is Cillian Murphy and in this recent movie of his, he is portraying a devoted father in 1985 named Bill Furlong who has been through a dark childhood and now uncovers a shocking and disturbing truths about Magdalene Laundries in Ireland also knows as Magdalene Asylums.

This historical drama with its topic captured my mind and wanted to watch. The movie was good although the pacing was so slow and I believe there were rooms for improvements on the topic and horrifying truths about those mentioned asylums and their operations under Catholic Church.

I felt the movie didn’t want to be harsh towards church and beliefs and therefore had to miss much of its deeper purpose. That maybe due much reasons and of course not every movie against Catholic Church can be easily made. (conspiracies which I prefer not to get into)

Yet the movie was able to create cold and harshness of the environment and culture and how people and their beliefs can be easily influenced by the people in charge of something. (specially faith related like Church).

In the ending a message is shown on dark screen typed in white font. A horrifying truth!!!

In the middle of the movie and after almost 40 minutes of slow pacing story that doesn’t build up much a sudden incident happens and a conversation between Bill and his wife Eileen;

Bill: What if it was one of ours?
Eileen:   They’re not our girls. So, what do we have to answer for?
Bill: Don’t you ever question it?

Eileen: You want to get on in this life, there are things you have to ignore.

The movie made me think how can a simple civilian person, help and save another human being. And this simple movie could demonstrate it.

If you like to see historical movies then this might be one in your list but I have to say the topic and the feeling involved are cold. Yet I personally valued such movies though I believe there could be much to say and the main topic was shadowed somehow for unknown reasons.

What I’ve got was, even as a single person with simple life, one can make a great change in at least another person’s life.
